Happy to call himself a “hybrid attorney,” he is both a litigator and a dealmaker. He can, with equal facility, try a case to its final verdict, or quarterback a complex transaction to its final signature.

After graduating from Brooklyn Law School in 1990, David spent enough time in large corporate law firms to see that it wasn’t for him. Since starting his own firm in 1998, he has focused on turning out “big firm work product, but without all the bells and whistles.”

His practice has since evolved into an eclectic mix of sophisticated clients in, among other things, fashion, restaurants, media, financial services, manufacturing, retail, hospitality, and a panoply of other diverse businesses. They admire his directness, his experience in an unusually wide range of circumstances, and his practical, business-oriented approach.

As a litigator, David keeps his clients grounded in reality. He gets them to question their own motives before bringing a lawsuit, and if he perceives that the probable result isn’t in their best interests, he will not hesitate to advise against it. If they decide to proceed, they do so with their eyes open. But whether they proceed or not, they know they will have a fierce advocate on their side, either way.

When doing a transaction, David likes to “read the last page of the book first” — to visualize, ahead of time, the desired end result. With this vision firmly in his head, he can then help his clients focus on the big picture, to understand what they’re really trying to do, and not get bogged down in minutiae that could kill the deal.

As general counsel to so many of his clients, David serves, not just as lawyer, but as strategic advisor, as well. They rely on him for the kind of unfiltered advice they might not otherwise get, even from their own management. He regularly counsels CEOs and boards of directors on a wide variety of business matters, helping them to see their businesses “from 50,000 feet up.” It’s an unusual level of trust for an outsider, but they clearly think he earns it.

Education
State University of New York at Albany, B.A. (cum laude, 1987).
